This position will be a hybrid work arrangement, which translates to 2-3 days minimum per week in the office.

We are seeking a London-based Senior Associate/Assistant Manager (depending on background) to serve as a key contributor to our global Tax Structuring team.

The ideal candidate is someone who has deep expertise with European and UK tax matters impacting private markets investment managers, particularly from transactional, offering/product development, and client reporting perspectives.

This role will report to the London-based Vice President of Tax Structuring but will have the opportunity to work across jurisdictions with Boston- and Singapore-based Tax Structuring colleagues, as well as with HarbourVest’s Boston-based team focusing on tax compliance matters, to support internal and external clients on a broad range of tax matters spanning the Firm’s diverse investments and offerings in Europe and the wider EMEA region.

What You Will Do:

Transactional Support
* Work closely with investment teams on transactions for HarbourVest funds and accounts, including participation in weekly reviews of investment opportunities and initial tax due diligence, to identify tax risks and opportunities
* Supervision of, and collaboration with, external legal and accounting advisers
* Make risk assessments and identify creative solutions to meet Firm and client objectives
* Act as a liaison to internal teams, including tax compliance, accounting, and client services to ensure ongoing obligations with respect to investments are satisfied
* Work with outside advisers to identify transactions requiring blockers, aggregators, AIVs, or other structures
* Keep track of transactional structures and determinations

Product Development
* Assist in the creation of new products for the European and global markets at each stage of development and throughout the life of the product; work with internal partners to provide relevant local reporting to investors in different jurisdictions
* Participate in analysis of novel entities/vehicles (e.g. UK QAHCs)

Ongoing Activities
* Draft policies and procedures and update standard forms and checklists
* Stay on top of developments in EU tax law impacting alternatives fund managers
* Update fund documentation, as needed
* Craft materials for and help lead trainings on tax topics for internal investing team members

Education Preferred:

* Degree in Accounting, Law, or a related field, with relevant qualifications

Experience:

* 3-5 years’ relevant post-qualification experience at a law firm, accounting firm, or in-house tax department at an investment manager

What You Bring

The ideal candidate brings significant experience with the tax issues impacting private markets funds operating in EMEA, their sponsors, and their investors, including, but not limited to, structuring for tax-efficient treatment of gains and income in different European jurisdictions, as well as managing risk of local filings for funds and investors; tax reporting requirements for investors in different European jurisdictions, considerations for both open- and closed-end European funds as well as for both pass-through and opaque structures; experience across a range of asset classes (including fund of funds, equity and debt co-investments, real assets/infrastructure); developments in European tax law, including BEPS/ATAD I, II & III, CRS/FATCA, and DAC 6.

Familiarity with U.S. tax concepts, as well as European tax compliance issues, is desirable

Candidates proficient in one or more of the following languages (in addition to proficiency in English) will be preferred: German, Italian, French.
