Firm Overview

The alternative asset and private equity management firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Company, commonly referred to as KKR, is based in New York city, with eleven additional offices across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Founded in 1976 by several investement professionals who had previously worked together at Bear Sterns, the firm has since completed a number of landmark leveraged buyouts, including the first leveraged buyout with a value of more than $1 billion, and the largest buyouts to date in France, Turkey, Singapore, Australia, India, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The firm became widely known for “Barbarians at the Gate,” which was the story of the Nabisco takeover.

The KKR team targets investment opportunities with companies in states of transition, where the firm can implement changes at the strategic and operational levels in order to grow the value of the business. KKR manages over $41.7 billion in private equity assets and more than $13.1 billion in credit assets, with an investor base that includes over forty state and local pension plans, representing almost 20 million individuals.

Well-known KKR portfolio companies include music publishing company BMG Rights Management, Dollar General Corporation, Toys “R” Us, Inc., Sungard Data Systems, and the Nielsen Company, a leading media and marketing research firm.
