Formerly known as the MMC Capital Corporation, Stone Point Capital LLC is a venture capital and private equity firm focused on investments and buyouts in numerous sectors of the finance industry, including mortgage services, insurance underwriting, asset management, employee benefits and healthcare, and insurance distribution.
Stone Point manages the four funds that make up the Trident Funds group, representing a total of $5.4 billion in investments, and manages an additional $4.5 billion in equity co-investments and commitments. The firm maintains offices in New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut, and includes over thirty advisors and investment professionals.
The Stone Point investment method involves a process of careful research of selected financial sectors, network development with management teams with experience in these sectors, and targeting of investment opportunities within the sectors. Investigation into potential investments is done using both “bottom-up” and “top-down” approaches, where theoretical market expertise is combined with granular knowledge of finance industry sectors and businesses gained through first-hand experience.
Investments into targeted sectors generally take the form of corporate divestitures and restructurings, partnerships with owner-operators, distressed asset purchasing, supporting start-ups built around expert managers, and leveraging market dislocations and imbalances of supply and demand.
