The average total compensation, industry-wide, was $255,000 USD – up 14 percent from last year’s figure of $224,000. We found that the large earning ranges were primarily driven by the size of bonuses. 30 percent of respondents reported salaries above $300,000. Last year, that figure was only 20 percent.

Private equity bonus percentages vary significantly and, as expected, typically the higher the role, the bigger the bonus. Although the average bonus received was 29 percent of total compensation, 15 percent of respondents received no bonus at all (somewhat expected given market conditions). Some of the largest bonus opportunities (as a percentage) are at the Associate level. Depending on the fund and performance, the Associate role is capable of Partner-level income.

This year showed a shift in UK earnings vs. USA. London’s increases outpaced increases in the US and the greatest difference is in the size of the bonus paid. Europe tends to lag both the US and the UK.
