CASE STUDY: Apax Partners’ Leveraged Buyout of Kinetic Concepts
In this case study, you’ll analyze the $6.3 billion leveraged buyout of Kinetic Concepts (a healthcare company) by Apax Partners and two pension funds. In addition to the LBO analysis, we’ll also look back on the deal and see how the company’s post-buyout financial performance differed from our projections.
Kinetic Concepts was a rumored buyout candidate for years, partially due to the perception it had “stable cash flows.” This prediction turned out to be false because the company’s revenue dropped substantially in the first post-buyout year; the company also announced an acquisition and cost-cutting measures and had its credit rating downgraded.
Hindsight is 20/20 and we’ll take advantage of this new information to better understand the ins-and-outs of LBO modeling in the real world. We’ll look back at how these factors impacted the deal and determine if they made it less viable, or if they did not make a big difference on the deal’s feasibility.
